Physical Properties
High Melting Point
Tantalum has an exceptionally high melting point of about 3,017°C (5,463°F), making it perfect for use in high-temperature applications where lesser metals would melt or degrade. This property is essential for its use in aerospace and power generation industries.
Density
It has a high density of 16.65 g/cm³, comparable to that of uranium and gold. This high density makes tantalum sheets and plates particularly robust and durable, ideal for producing heavy-duty parts with relatively compact dimensions.
Ductility
Tantalum is highly ductile, allowing it to be drawn into fine wires or stretched into thin foils without fracturing. This ductility facilitates the manufacturing of tantalum foils used in capacitors and other electronic components.

Tensile Strength
The tensile strength of pure tantalum is about 180 MPa, but this can increase significantly when alloyed with other metals like tungsten or niobium. Tantalum alloys are engineered to possess tensile strengths as high as 1,000 MPa, making them suitable for extreme applications.
Hardness
On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, tantalum scores between 6 and 6.5, which makes it comparable to titanium and softer than popular hard metals like tungsten. However, its Vickers hardness can be about 200 HV, indicating its suitability in wear-resistant applications.
Elastic Modulus
The elastic modulus of tantalum is about 186 GPa, which is lower than that of many steels but still indicates good rigidity and resistance to deformation under stress.

Chemical Properties
Corrosion Resistance: One of Tantalum’s most remarkable features is its excellent resistance to corrosion; it does not react with hydrochloric acid, concentrated nitric acid, or even aqua regia under normal conditions. This resistance makes it ideal for chemical reaction vessels, heat exchangers, and other equipment exposed to aggressive environments.
Reactivity: At room temperature, tantalum is almost completely inert to chemical attack. This property makes it very useful in applications where high purity is necessary, such as semiconductor production and laboratory equipment.
