Standard: AWS A5.16, GB/T3623-2022, ISO24034; divided into two categories: straight TIG filler wire and coil MIG welding wire.
 

Main titanium welding wire grades (US AWS / Chinese National Standard comparison + application)

The preferred welding wire grade should be consistent with the base material grade; for welding of different titanium materials, the welding wire with better corrosion resistance and plasticity should be selected; it should be noted that titanium and steel of different types cannot be welded directly with titanium welding wire.

Common supply specifications


1) TIG straight wire (length 1000mm)
Diameter: 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4(2.5), 3.0(3.2), 4.0, 5.0 mm, standard length 1000mm, can be cut to fixed length.


2) MIG coil wire (automatic welding)
Diameter: 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.6 mm; coil weight: 1kg, 5kg, 10kg, 15kg plastic welding wire coil, the internal welding points of the coil wire are not allowed to be connected.

Process reminder:


1. TIG manual welding: prefer straight wire 1.6-2.4mm;
2. MIG automatic welding: prefer coil wire 0.8-1.6mm;
3. Laser welding: prefer fine wire 1.0-1.6mm.

 

Customer purchase selection precautions:

 

1. Grade selection
The first step is to confirm the base material grade: if the base material is Gr2 (TA2), the welding wire is selected as ERTi-2; if the base material is Gr5 (TC4), the welding wire is selected as ERTi-5;


2. Working environment
◦ Ordinary seawater, salt spray: ERTi-2;
◦ Hydrochloric acid, wet chlorine gas strong corrosion: ERTi-7; sulfuric acid phosphoric acid medium selects ERTi-12;
◦ Aviation / high-strength structural components: ERTi-5;
◦ Medical, low-temperature high toughness: ERTi-5ELI;

 

For heterogeneous titanium welding: for example, Gr1 + Gr5, the wire with better plasticity should be selected as ERTi-2;

Pressure vessel equipment must select ELI ultra-low gap grade welding wire, with strict control of oxygen nitrogen hydrogen impurities.

Specification (diameter) selection

 

1. Take the base material thickness as the first basis, thin material selects fine wire, thick material selects coarse wire;
2. For manual TIG welding, try not to select too thick welding wire, too large current is likely to burn through;
3. For automated MIG welding, prefer coil wire; for manual welding, prefer 1-meter straight wire;
4. For small batch experiments, select straight wire; for large-scale production lines, select coil welding wire.

 

Packaging selection


• Straight wire: vacuum-sealed plastic tube packaging, moisture-proof and oxidation-proof;
• Coil wire: vacuum moisture-proof packaging, internal desiccant is included;


Titanium welding wire is prone to absorb hydroxide, must be vacuum-sealed packaging, cannot be left bare.

 

How to test whether the goods quality is qualified,The biggest risk of titanium welding wire: oxygen nitrogen hydrogen impurities exceed the standard, surface oxidation, cracks and peeling, size tolerance exceeds the standard, mixed grades, high impurities will directly cause weld seam pores, brittle fracture, corrosion failure.

 

1. Surface: bright silver-gray, no blackening, bluish-yellow oxidation, peeling, cracks, scratches, pits, oil stains;


2. Coil wire: coil neatly arranged, the internal welding points of the coil wire are not allowed to be connected;


3. Straight wire: surface clean, no oxidation spots, end cutting edge smooth.


If there is blue-yellow oxidation, the welding wire has absorbed hydrogen oxide, the welding will produce pores and brittle fracture, and it will be rejected directly.

 

4. Dimension tolerance inspection (calipers, micrometers)
Measure the diameter at multiple points in different positions, check the order tolerance; if the wire diameter is too thick and too thin, it will cause unstable welding current and large spatter.


5. Simple welding trial welding verification we suggested as following :
Take the delivered welding wire and perform TIG test plate welding:
Qualified weld seam: The weld seam surface is silvery white;
Light yellow: Slight oxidation, still assessable;

Blue, gray-black: Poor protection of the welding wire, excessive impurities, the product cannot be used.
