Material Characteristics

   width 170mm tantalum foil

Pure tantalum foil is a high-performance refractory metal thin material. It is made from high-purity tantalum metal with a purity of 99.95% through cold rolling processing. Tantalum has a density of 16.6 g/cm³, its melting point reaches 2996°C, which ranks high among all metals, and its chemical inertness is particularly stable. When tantalum is processed into foil form, its physical and chemical properties are fully retained and presented in the form of flexible sheets. It is a key material required in many key technical fields.

From a materials science perspective, the core competitiveness of pure tantalum foil comes from the tantalum pentoxide passivation film spontaneously formed on its surface. The thickness of this oxide layer is about 2-5 nm, with a dense structure and significant self-healing ability. When the foil surface is scratched or partially damaged, as long as there is a trace amount of oxygen in the environment, the passivation film can quickly regenerate and restore its barrier function. This characteristic enables pure tantalum foil to exhibit stability unmatched by other metal materials in extremely corrosive media. At the electrochemical level, although the standard electrode potential of tantalum is -0.81 V (relative to the standard hydrogen electrode), the existence of the passivation film increases the actual potential to +0.5 to +1.0 V. The entire material is in the electrochemical passivation zone, and almost no anodic dissolution occurs.

The general purity of industrial-grade pure tantalum can reach 99.95%, and high-purity tantalum can also reach 99.99%. Impurity elements such as oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, iron, nickel, etc. are strictly limited to extremely low levels. The significance of high purity is not only to improve the bulk performance of the material, but also to eliminate the risk of failure that may be caused by trace impurity elements - for example, in chemical reactors, even trace amounts of metal ions leaching out may contaminate product batches; in human implants, the precipitation of any harmful elements may trigger biological rejection reactions.

In addition, tantalum metal also has good ductility and workability. Pure tantalum foil has an elongation of more than 25% in the annealed state and can be stamped, bent, deep drawn, or rolled into complex geometric shapes without cracking. This feature allows it to flexibly adapt to diverse industrial needs, from ultra-thin capacitor winding to lining construction of complex curved equipment, and can achieve a precise fit.

Products Advantages

The ultimate protective capability of self-healing passivation film

The corrosion resistance of pure tantalum foil does not come from an external coating, but from the Ta₂O₅ oxide layer spontaneously formed in its bulk material. This oxide film is only 2-5 nm thick, but has extremely high density and chemical stability. Its most unique feature is its self-healing ability - when the foil surface is scratched or partially damaged, as long as there is a trace amount of oxygen in the environment, the passivation film can quickly regenerate and restore its complete protective function. Unlike other metal materials that gradually deteriorate in corrosive environments, tantalum's passivation film makes it exhibit "zero corrosion" or "unmeasurable" characteristics in most corrosive media. For example, after continuous immersion in concentrated sulfuric acid at 175°C for one year, the corrosion depth of the tantalum surface is only 0.0004 mm. This active protection capability makes pure tantalum foil the ultimate solution for handling extremely corrosive media in chemical engineering.

Ultra-high temperature resistance of 3000°C level

The melting point of tantalum is as high as 2996°C, second only to tungsten and rhenium among known metals, and much higher than most high-temperature alloys and stainless steel. In a high temperature environment of vacuum or inert atmosphere, pure tantalum foil can work stably in the temperature range of 1500°C to 2500°C, maintaining high tensile strength and creep resistance. In contrast, many high-temperature alloys begin to soften or even melt in this temperature range, while tantalum foils maintain their structural integrity and functionality. This characteristic makes it irreplaceable in vacuum high-temperature furnace insulation systems, heating elements and high-temperature components in the nuclear industry.

Process advantages that take into account both high purity and high ductility

Pure tantalum foil achieves a high purity of over 99.95% while still maintaining excellent cold working properties. The elongation of annealed tantalum foil can reach more than 25% and can be easily stamped, bent, deep drawn or rolled into complex geometric shapes. This feature is of great value in practical applications: anti-corrosion linings of chemical equipment can fit seamlessly into complex inner wall structures; medical devices can be precisely shaped at the surgical site to match the patient's skeletal contours; ultra-thin capacitors can be tightly wound in a very small space. Our pure tantalum foil is processed through precise multi-pass cold rolling and vacuum annealing processes to ensure that the material has good formability in subsequent processing, reducing manufacturing difficulty and scrap rate for customers.

Biocompatibility clinically verified for more than 80 years

Pure tantalum has been used in the biomedical field for more than 80 years, and its safety and effectiveness have been verified by a large number of clinical practices. Tantalum has excellent biological inertness, does not chemically react with human tissue, does not release harmful ions, and does not trigger immune rejection or allergic reactions. It also has osteoinductive capabilities and can achieve direct chemical bonding with living bone. In addition, tantalum is completely nonmagnetic, and patients implanted with tantalum materials can safely undergo MRI exams without the risk of artifacts or migration. These properties make it a preferred material for long-term implantable medical devices.

Strict quality control system and traceability

Each batch of pure tantalum foil we supply undergoes a complete quality control process, including chemical composition spectral analysis, gas impurity content detection (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen), mechanical property testing and dimensional accuracy inspection. Products can provide quality certificates that comply with ASTM B708 or GB/T standards to ensure reliable material sources, stable performance, and good consistency between batches. For special application requirements, we can also provide third-party testing reports to meet stringent certification requirements in aerospace, medical implants and other fields.

Products Applications

Chemical engineering and anti-corrosion lining fields

This is the core application direction of pure tantalum foil with the most technical advantages. In chemical equipment that needs to handle highly corrosive media - such as hydrochloric acid concentration towers, sulfuric acid heat exchangers, nitric acid reactors, chlor-alkali industrial equipment, etc. - using pure tantalum foil as lining or cladding is an effective solution to achieve long-term reliable operation. Specific data shows that under the conditions of hydrochloric acid with a concentration of ≤37% and a temperature of ≤190°C, the corrosion rate of tantalum is less than 0.01 mm/year; it is also extremely resistant to sulfuric acid with a concentration of ≤98% and a temperature of ≤200°C; in nitric acid in the full concentration range (including boiling state), tantalum shows complete corrosion resistance. Tantalum can also work stably for extremely corrosive media such as aqua regia, chlorine, and bromine. In addition, tantalum also has excellent corrosion resistance to organic acids (such as acetic acid, citric acid), chloride molten salts, and liquid metals. By lining pure tantalum foil on the surface of carbon steel or other substrates, the device can be structurally strong and chemically inert, significantly extending its service life.

High temperature vacuum technology field

The melting point of tantalum is as high as 2996°C, ranking among the highest among all metals. In high-temperature furnaces under vacuum or inert atmosphere, pure tantalum foil is widely used as multi-layer heat shields, heating element supports, charging containers (boats, trays) and as a protective layer for high-temperature sensors. In these applications, pure tantalum foil is able to withstand repeated thermal cycling in the 1500°C to 2500°C range, maintaining mechanical properties and shape stability. For example, in sapphire crystal growth furnaces, high-temperature ceramic sintering furnaces, special alloy vacuum smelting and magnetic material sintering equipment, thermal insulation systems made of tantalum foil can effectively reduce heat loss and improve the uniformity and controllability of furnace temperature.

Biomedical implant field

Tantalum is known as a "biophilic metal" and has a clinical history of more than 80 years since it was first used in the field of orthopedics in 1940. Pure tantalum foil is used to manufacture skull repair meshes, orthopedic implants (bone plates, bone nails), pacemaker casings, cardiovascular stents, and repair membranes in neurosurgery. Its core advantages are: it is completely inert and does not trigger immune rejection or allergic reactions; it can have good osseointegration with living bones; and it is completely non-magnetic, so implanted patients can safely perform MRI examinations without artifacts or displacement.

Electronics and Semiconductor Industry

In the field of microelectronics, pure tantalum foil is used as the base material of sputtering targets for depositing tantalum or tantalum nitride films on chips as diffusion barriers for copper interconnect wires. In addition, ultra-thin high-purity tantalum foil is also a key anode material for high-end tantalum capacitors. By expanding the specific surface area through electrochemical etching, extremely high capacitance per unit volume can be achieved. In aerospace electronic equipment, military radar and communication systems, tantalum foil capacitors are known for their high reliability.
