Molybdenum Support Rods for Electrode Supports in Glass Melting Kilns

Molybdenum Support Rods for Electrode Supports2

Molybdenum support rods for electrodes supports, It was during the production process, the glass melting kiln mainly experiences conditions such as molten glass, alkali metal vapors (sodium/kali), high temperatures, thermal cycling, and fluctuating atmospheres.

Therefore, we chose molybdenum as the support rods, which serve as the electrode supports. The main functions of these rods are to bear weight, resist alkali vapor corrosion, and control creep deformation to prevent electrode displacement and reduce downtime losses.

Which grade of molybdenum support rods is more suitable? The recommended grade comparisons are as follows:

MoLa (Molybdenum-Lanthanum alloy, most recommended for electrode supports in glass melting kilns)- Composition: Mo + lanthanide oxides (0.4 - 1.2% La₂O₃)

1. The creep resistance of MoLa is far superior to pure Mo1 molybdenum, it is not likely to bend or sag at 1400 - 1700℃ for a long time, and the electrode position remains stable;

2. It has strong resistance to alkali metal vapor (sodium vapor) erosion, which is the mainstream choice in glass industry melting kilns;

3. The recrystallization temperature is high, and it is not prone to brittle fracture under thermal cycling impact;

- Application: continuous glass melting kilns, optical glass, quartz glass kiln electrode supports, it is the first grade for supporting rods in glass melting kilns.

TZM (Molybdenum-Titanium-Zirconium alloy)-Composition: Mo + Ti + Zr + C

- Advantages: Top-notch creep resistance, the highest high-temperature strength;

- Shortcomings: Sensitive to alkali metal vapor, the corrosion rate in sodium/kali atmosphere is much faster than MoLa;
- Not recommended for ordinary sodium-calcium glass melting kilns; only suitable for alkali-free glass, quartz glass, with extremely low alkali vapor

Mo1 pure molybdenum

- Advantage: The lowest price;
- Shortcomings: The recrystallization temperature is low, after high-temperature use, the crystal grains grow and become brittle, the creep resistance is poor, and it is prone to bending and deformation; the loss in alkali vapor environment is fast;

- Only suitable for short-term, intermittent small kilns, not recommended for continuous glass melting kiln electrode supports.

Therefore, we can select the appropriate grade through our practical application. That is, when using the electrodes for sodium-calcium float glass / ordinary optical glass furnaces, we should choose the MoLa molybdenum-lanthanum alloy support rods; only for kilns with no alkali and very little alkali vapor, should we consider TZM.

Key Points for Specification Selection
1. Diameter Design

Select based on the total weight of the electrode + additional stress from thermal expansion. Do not only consider the strength at room temperature. High-temperature creep is the main cause of failure.
- Heavy load, kiln temperature > 1500℃: Prefer a larger diameter, or use hollow molybdenum support rods (lightweight while maintaining bending stiffness, cost optimization)
Diameter tolerance: Generally follow ASTM B386, H8/H9 precision tolerance to ensure assembly and avoid assembly stress

2. Length and Thermal Expansion Reserve

The thermal expansion coefficient of molybdenum is low, but it still elongates at high temperatures; reserve thermal expansion gaps during design and installation. Forced rigid fixation will cause the support rod to bend or break.
3. Surface Treatment

- We recommend using annealing stress-relief treatment to eliminate machining residual stress and prevent stress cracking at the initial heating stage; it is not recommended to apply coating, so most coatings will flake off in the alkali vapor environment of the glass furnace, and the flaking particles will contaminate the glass melt, causing bubbles and stone defects
4. Connection End

Electrode support rods at both ends: Molybdenum threads should preferably use coarse teeth; molybdenum has high hardness and brittleness, and fine teeth are prone to breakage;
the threaded parts also need stress-relief treatment.

Risk Points that Must Be Avoided (Directly Affecting Wear and Production Line Shutdown)

Molybdenum Support Rods for Electrode Supports

1.Atmosphere Risk: Strictly prohibit contact with air at high temperatures.                                                                                                  -> At 600℃, molybdenum rapidly oxidizes to form MoO₃ and volatilizes. The furnace is normally in a protective atmosphere, but the key to prevention is the presence of trace oxygen during opening and maintenance, kiln body leakage, and fluctuations in air intake, which can cause the support rod to be consumed layer by layer from the surface.
The main solution is to ensure the sealing of the kiln body, and strictly control the temperature rise and cooling curve during start-up and shutdown.

2.Alkali Metal Vapor Corrosion                                                                         -The volatile Na and K vapor from the molten glass will react with molybdenum to form low-melting-point molybdate salts, causing surface pits, thinning of the cross-section, and fracture of the support rod.

The main countermeasure is to select the grade MoLa, design the structure reasonably, and minimize the direct exposure of the support rod to the alkali vapor-rich area.

3.Temperature Cycling Impact                                                                         -Frequent start-ups and shutdowns of the kiln will cause repeated recrystallization, resulting in the brittleness of the molybdenum material. How to avoid it? During use, for continuous furnaces, try to stabilize the process temperature and reduce temperature fluctuations.

4.Direct Immersion of Glass Liquid                                                                - Molybdenum can briefly contact the molten glass, but will be eroded if immersed for a long time. Therefore, in the structural design, avoid the molybdenum support rod directly immersed in the glass melt, only use the upper electrode support.
