Medical titanium rods are raw materials used in human bodies or medical devices. Since these products concern life and property safety, it's crucial to mitigate risks during procurement. Below are some common pitfalls when purchasing medical Gr23 titanium rods:

Using industrial titanium rods instead of medical titanium rods

 

Industrial titanium rods have higher impurity content, such as oxygen and iron levels, which are several times or even dozens of times higher than those in medical titanium rods. They also lack biocompatibility testing, potentially causing adverse reactions such as inflammation and rejection when implanted in the human body. Medical devices manufactured using substandard industrial titanium rods will also fail testing.

 

Avoidance methods: Require suppliers to provide medical device quality management system certification and production licenses; verify the standard numbers of the quality certification documents provided by the supplier. For pure titanium, check if it conforms to ASTM F67 standard; for titanium alloys, check if it conforms to ASTM F136 standard. Be extremely cautious if the standard is GB/T 2965 or ASTM B348 (industrial standards); send samples for third-party testing to check if the impurity content meets medical standards, and perform biocompatibility-related tests such as cytotoxicity, sensitisation, and genotoxicity tests. Cytotoxicity testing is essential as it directly affects health and safety.

Using inferior grades, such as substituting Gr1 for Gr4 and Ti-6Al-4V for Ti-6Al-4V ELI.

 

Gr1 has a strength of 170 MPa, far lower than Gr4's 620 MPa, which may lead to fracture in load-bearing applications and cause serious consequences. Ti-6Al-4V (Gr5) has a higher carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and iron content than Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Gr23), potentially compromising biocompatibility and toughness.

 

Mitigation Method: Perform spectral analysis on samples to confirm that the chemical composition matches the grade and meets the corresponding standard requirements.

Falsified or incomplete supplier quality certification documents

 

The absence of complete quality certification documents indicates that the product has not undergone rigorous testing, leading to compromised performance and purity. This poses a risk regardless of whether the material is used in implants or medical devices.

 

Solution: Carefully verify the quality certification documents. These documents must include: supplier name, batch number, grade, standard, chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment records, biocompatibility test results, and the signature and official seal of the testing personnel.

Significant Performance Differences Between Different Batches

 

Purchasing multiple batches can lead to inconsistent quality of processed medical products if there are significant differences in chemical composition and mechanical properties.

 

Solution: Require suppliers to provide products from the same batch. After each batch arrives, conduct random sampling tests on key indicators such as tensile strength, elongation, and chemical cost, comparing them with historical batch data. The difference rate should be ≤5%.

Clearly Defined Dimensional Tolerances

 

 If only the diameter is specified without specifying tolerances, products with large diameter errors may be received, exceeding the precision range of subsequent processing equipment and resulting in immediate rejection.

 

Solution: Clearly define dimensional tolerance grades in the contract. Upon receiving the goods, use measuring tools to check key dimensions such as diameter, roundness, and straightness.

Undetected Surface Defects

 

Surface imperfections in medical titanium rods, such as microcracks and inclusions, may expand during subsequent processing, leading to implant breakage. Incomplete removal of scratches and oxide scale can affect biocompatibility.

 

Solution: Require suppliers to provide flaw detection reports. Upon arrival, conduct a manual inspection to ensure the surface is free of obvious scratches, oxidation color differences, and oil residue. If it is for human implants, surface polishing is required, and a roughness test report must be provided.

Neglecting Transportation and Storage Conditions

 

Medical titanium rods require a very high surface finish. Contact with carbon steel or stainless steel during transportation can cause electrochemical corrosion due to the iron ion reaction, affecting quality.

 

Remedies: Require suppliers to use individual plastic bags for moisture-proof packaging, ensuring each titanium rod is individually packaged to prevent metal-to-metal contact. Use sealed transportation methods, avoiding exposure to sunlight and rain, and prohibiting mixing with corrosive substances. Storage warehouses should be dry and well-ventilated.
