Why does the hot zone of vacuum furnace always deform first in a fixed position
Anyone who has run through a vacuum furnace or a hydrogen protection furnace knows that the heater and heat shield are most likely to have problems, and the whole piece is often not scrapped at the same time, but creep deformation occurs first in certain areas with large force or temperature difference. The pure molybdenum strip has been used for a long time, and the surface begins to bulge, sag, and even partially crack. The maintenance team can only stop the furnace in advance to replace it.
TZM molybdenum alloy strips behave differently in this regard. It adds a small amount of titanium and zirconium to molybdenum, combined with a small amount of carbon, to form fine carbide particles. These particles nail the grain boundaries, making it less easy for the material to "flow" slowly when it is stressed at high temperature for a long time. In actual use, the deformation speed of the strip with the same thickness is obviously slower under the similar temperature and load.
For furnace designers and maintainers, this is directly related to shutdown. Changing the hot zone is not only the cost of materials, but also the time of reloading, vacuuming, and heating up. After many factories replace pure molybdenum with TZM, the hot zone replacement cycle can be lengthened, and the annual maintenance plan is also relieved a lot. Of course, the effect depends on the specific temperature range, purity and load distribution, and not all working conditions can be doubled.
Some people will struggle with price when choosing materials. TZM is indeed more expensive than pure molybdenum, but if the shutdown and labor are included, the comprehensive account is often better. Especially for continuous production furnaces, the hidden benefits brought by stability are more obvious.
If you are doing a hot zone upgrade for an existing furnace, or designing a new high-temperature unit, check the operating temperature, life expectancy, and current deformation. The TZM molybdenum alloy strip specification can sometimes turn "regular emergency repair" into "planned maintenance".
