Why is molybdenum-lanthanum alloy wire longer at high temp?

In the fields of vacuum furnaces, heat treatment equipment, and high-end lighting, many engineers have encountered the same problem: pure molybdenum wires begin to deform and become brittle after a certain period of time, and finally have to be replaced. This is not only maintenance costs, but may also lead to fluctuations in the entire production batch. And when they are replaced with molybdenum-lanthanum alloy wire (Mo-La wire), the situation often changes significantly. Under the same working conditions, the service life can often be extended by 1.5 to 3 times.

The root of this difference lies in a key mechanism in the microcosm of materials: lanthanum oxide dispersion strengthening and laminated fiber structure.

At high temperature (especially above 1000 ℃), the grains of pure molybdenum will grow rapidly and recrystallize, the fibrous grains originally drawn will gradually become equiaxed grains, the strength and plasticity of the material will drop sharply, and the creep will accelerate, and finally rupture or severe deformation occurs. Molybdenum-lanthanum alloy wires are completely different. During the production process, we uniformly disperse a certain proportion of lanthanum oxide (La ₂ O ₂) into the molybdenum matrix. These fine oxide particles are like countless "nails", firmly nailing grain boundaries and dislocations. Even if the material experiences long-term high temperature, it is difficult to recrystallize on a large scale.

The result is the well-known stacked fiber structure. This structure is still stable even above 1500 ℃, which greatly improves the creep resistance of molybdenum lanthanum wire at high temperature, and at the same time increases the recrystallization temperature by about 500 ℃. This is not theoretical data in the laboratory, but real feedback from a large number of vacuum furnace users: the heating element used to be replaced every six months, but now it can be used for a year and a half or even longer.

What's more worth mentioning is that this strengthening also retains the good electrical and thermal conductivity of molybdenum itself, and at the same time allows the material to show better toughness during high-temperature cycles and is not prone to sudden brittleness. This is especially friendly for devices that need to be turned on and off.

We have had many customers. At first, they just purchased a small amount of molybdenum lanthanum wire for comparative tests with the mentality of "giving it a try". After using it up, they directly replaced the heating system of the entire production line with molybdenum lanthanum material. Because they have calculated an account: although the unit price is slightly higher, the overall cost has been reduced in terms of downtime, maintenance labor and product pass rate.

Of course, the performance of molybdenum lanthanum wire also requires correct use conditions-temperature range, matching protection, and standardized installation. We have always suggested that customers tell us the actual working condition parameters at the material selection stage, so as to recommend the most suitable grades and specifications to avoid performance waste or improper use.

If you are having a headache about the life of high-temperature components, you might as well start by understanding the "laminated fiber structure" and re-examine your material choices. In many cases, a seemingly ordinary alloy wire can improve the stability and economy of the entire equipment to a higher level.

Welcome to tell us your application scenarios and current difficulties at any time. We are willing to share with you the actual cases and selections accumulated over the years, and find the most effective solution together.
