The difference between UNS R04200 and R04210
Often, many people tend to confuse the two pure niobium materials, UNS R04200 and R04210. Both are forged pure niobium under the ASTM standard, but they are different and cannot be substituted randomly. Choosing the wrong one can easily lead to project failure. Today, we will explain the positioning of these two grades, impurity indicators, and applicable scenarios to facilitate customers' selection and reference.
According to ASTM B392/B393 standards:

✅ R04200 (Type 1, reactor-grade pure niobium, Nb1)
High-purity niobium for reactors, with strict product control standards. The upper limits of oxygen, iron, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, etc. are lower. The oxygen content is up to 0.015%, and the restrictions on various metal impurities are very strict. The low impurity characteristics bring excellent neutron absorption performance, vacuum high-temperature stability, and welding performance, with a very low risk of impurity precipitation inside the material.
Applicable scenarios: nuclear industrial equipment, superconducting components, ultra-high vacuum chambers, medical implants, high-end scientific research instruments, high-end electronic anodes, mostly used for high-end projects with strict requirements for purity, vacuum performance, and radiation environment.
✅R04210 (Type 2, commercial-grade pure niobium, Nb2)
General industrial commercial pure niobium, with a more relaxed impurity range. The upper limit of oxygen content is 0.025%, and the impurity indicators of iron, tantalum, tungsten, etc. are relaxed. It is also the most widely circulated pure niobium grade in the global market. It has similar basic corrosion resistance, plasticity to R04200, and can be stably achieved through conventional machining, bending, and welding.
It has a prominent cost advantage.
Applicable scenarios: chemical corrosion-resistant pipe fittings, high-temperature furnace insulation components, ordinary electronic components, coating targets, niobium welding materials, hardware processing parts. Most of the conventional industrial applications prefer this.
