Welded Tantalum Crucible
Details:
The pure tantalum welded crucible is based on a high-purity tantalum plate with a purity of ≥99.95% (brand name R05200/Ta1) and is precisely formed by a vacuum welding process. It is a special high-temperature container designed for ultra-high temperatures (stable operating temperature above 2000°C and short-term resistance to 2800°C), strong corrosive environments, and high-purity processes. Tantalum metal has a melting point as high as 3017°C and a density of about 16.6 g/cm³. It is extremely chemically inert—except for hydrofluoric acid, it can withstand corrosion from most strong acids, strong alkalis, and molten metals.
The welding process gives the tantalum crucible an unprecedented size limit (diameter up to 800 mm, height up to 800 mm, and wall thickness of ~0.8~8 mm) and an extremely high degree of shape freedom (supports cylindrical, conical, rectangular, and any special-shaped customization). It can significantly shorten the processing cycle and significantly reduce customization costs without the need for large molds and high mold opening costs.
Products are widely used in sapphire crystal growth, rare earth and precious metal smelting, semiconductor material refining, vacuum coating, chemical reaction vessels, scientific research experiments, etc., and strictly implement international standards such as ASTM B365 and GB/T14814. The factory provides a material certificate and supports precise customization according to the drawings. It is the most flexible and cost-effective choice among industrial-grade high-purity and high-temperature containers.

Material Characteristics

   pure tantalum crucible

A pure tantalum welded crucible is a special high-temperature container carefully built with a high-purity metal tantalum plate as the base material through precision sheet metal processing and a vacuum welding process. Tantalum is a rare high-melting-point metal with a melting point as high as 3017°C and a density of about 16.6g/cm³. It has excellent ductility and excellent chemical stability and is known as the "King of Metal Anticorrosion". Different from stamping, spinning, or machining, the welding process gives tantalum crucibles a significant breakthrough in the upper size limit and shape freedom, making large-scale, special-shaped, and cost-effective customization a reality.

During the production process, we select high-quality tantalum plates (brand name R05200/Ta1) with a purity of ≥99.95% and strictly implement international and national standards such as ASTM B365 and GB/T14814. The tantalum plate is made into a blank through multiple sheet metal processes, such as precision cutting, round forming, and bottom cover welding, and is then welded in a vacuum environment or under the protection of high-purity inert gas. The entire process is isolated from the intervention of oxygen, nitrogen, and other impurities. The welds are smooth and firm, with good roundness, no pores, and excellent sealing. They undergo strict dimensional inspection and vacuum leak detection before leaving the factory.

Welded tantalum crucibles can be flexibly customized according to customer drawings, covering the diameter range from Φ50mm to Φ800mm, the height range from 15mm to 800mm, and the wall thickness range from 0.8mm to 8mm. It can meet the precision customization needs of various non-standard sizes, special-shaped structures (tapered, rectangular boxes, etc.), and even thin-walled tantalum crucibles. It is a key process path to expand the excellent high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance of tantalum metal from small laboratory containers to large industrial systems, providing a more efficient, flexible, and economical container solution for modern ultra-high temperature processes.

Products Advantages

Extremely high purity

Pure tantalum welding crucibles are made of high-purity tantalum plates with a purity of ≥99.95% and do not contain any alloying elements. This purity level minimizes the impact of impurities on experiments or production processes, and is particularly critical for high-end applications where impurity control is extremely strict, such as semiconductor-grade crystal growth and high-purity rare earth smelting. Compared with tantalum-tungsten alloy crucibles such as Ta-2.5W or Ta-10W, pure tantalum crucibles can provide the most "pure" reaction environment and ensure that the prepared materials are not cross-contaminated by foreign elements.

Super high temperature resistance

The melting point of tantalum metal is as high as 3017°C, and it can be used stably for a long time at temperatures above 2000°C under vacuum or inert gas protection. At the same time, the vapor pressure of tantalum at high temperatures is extremely low. Even if it is heated for a long time, it will not cause material loss or pollute the environment due to volatilization, ensuring long-term stable operation of the process. For ultra-high temperature processes such as sapphire crystal growth (>2000°C) and refractory metal smelting, tantalum crucibles are a proven container choice.

Excellent corrosion resistance

Tantalum exhibits extremely excellent corrosion resistance to most strong acids except hydrofluoric acid and remains stable under both hot and cold conditions. This feature comes from the dense tantalum pentoxide (Ta₂O₅) protective film naturally formed on its surface, which can keep the inner wall of the container intact even under harsh working conditions. It not only protects the crucible body, but also effectively prevents impurities from contaminating the process.

Large size and capacity given by the welding process

Compared to stamping/spinning processes that rely on molds and forging equipment, welded tantalum crucibles offer significant advantages in terms of upper size limits. Without the need for large molds and high mold opening costs, welded tantalum crucibles with diameters up to 800mm and heights up to 800mm can be produced, with capacities ranging from tens to hundreds of liters. This technical feature provides a feasible path for the manufacturing of tantalum containers on an industrial scale, and is particularly suitable for mass production scenarios with large input quantities, high production efficiency, and low unit cost.

Flexible, special-shaped customization capabilities

The welding process is not limited by the shape of the rotary body and can be accurately processed according to the CAD drawings provided by the customer - whether it is a cylindrical, conical or rectangular box structure, or even a multi-layer composite structure, it can be realized through sheet metal unfolding and welding assembly. For aerospace special design, new material laboratory research and development, and other scenarios that require non-standard geometric shapes, welded tantalum crucibles are the most flexible and fastest-responsive solution.

High cost performance and short delivery timeThe material utilization rate of the welding method is significantly better than that of the machining method. There is no need for expensive large-scale stamping dies, which greatly reduces the processing cost of small and medium-sized batches of special-shaped tantalum crucibles, and the delivery cycle can be compressed from months to weeks. For large-size or small batch custom orders, welding solutions are the most cost-effective option.

Products Applications

Crystal growth field

A tantalum crucible is the core container in the crystal growth furnace for functional crystals such as sapphire and lithium tantalate. The crystal growth temperature of sapphire usually exceeds 2000°C, and the purity of the melt is extremely demanding. Tantalum crucibles are ideal container materials in this process due to their extremely high melting point (3017°C), extremely low vapor pressure, and chemical inertness that hardly reacts with the alumina melt. The welding process allows the crucible size to be precisely matched according to the customer's different crystal growth furnace types, which is especially popular among crystal growth manufacturers with various equipment specifications.

Rare earth and precious metal smelting

Tantalum crucible can be safely used for high-temperature smelting of active rare earth elements such as neodymium, praseodymium, samarium and platinum group precious metals. These metals are highly corrosive to most metal containers in the molten state, and the dense tantalum pentoxide protective film formed on the surface of tantalum can resist the erosion of most molten metals and chemical media. The welding process makes it possible to produce large-capacity tantalum crucibles with a single feeding capacity of tens of kilograms, meeting the needs of industrial continuous production.

Preparation of semiconductor and electronic materials

Tantalum crucibles are widely used in high-temperature refining and regional smelting processes of semiconductor materials such as polysilicon, gallium arsenide, and indium phosphide. In the tantalum capacitor sintering process, it serves as the material receiving tray for the electrolytic capacitor anode, maintaining structural stability during the high-temperature sintering process and ensuring the purity and sintering quality of the anode block. In addition, in the production of vacuum electronic devices such as OLED evaporation, vacuum coating, and X-ray tube manufacturing, tantalum crucibles are also used as evaporation source materials or cathode carrying containers.

Chemical industry

Tantalum crucibles can be used as reactor liners resistant to strong acid corrosion to handle extremely corrosive chemicals such as aqua regia, sulfuric acid, and hydrochloric acid. Due to its resistance to almost all strong acids except hydrofluoric acid, it occupies a special position in chemical corrosion-resistant processes.

Scientific research laboratories

The exploration of new materials in laboratories often requires crucibles of non-standard sizes, non-standard shapes, and even multi-layer nested structures. The welding process can almost achieve a highly customized response of "make-to-order". Combined with the extremely high purity and chemical inertness of tantalum, it provides a reliable experimental tool for cutting-edge scientific research and exploration.

Vacuum coating and electron beam melting

Tantalum has good thermal stability in a vacuum environment, and its low vapor pressure characteristics can effectively avoid high-temperature volatilization from contaminating the vacuum cavity. It is widely used in vacuum evaporation equipment and electron beam melting processes.

Why choose a pure tantalum crucible with the welding method?

Breakthrough of the size bottleneck

The equipment capacity of the spinning process determines the upper limit of the crucible diameter. When the crucible diameter exceeds 300mm, the investment cost of spinning equipment and the difficulty of mold development rise sharply, and even directly exceed the equipment limit. The welding process uses tantalum plates as raw materials. Through the processes of sheet metal unfolding, rolling, and butt welding, these limitations can be easily overcome to produce large tantalum crucibles with a diameter of 800mm and a height of 800mm, meeting the needs of industrial-level large-scale production.

Liberation from shape restrictions

The spinning and stamping processes are essentially only suitable for rotary body shapes - axially symmetrical structures such as circles and cups. For rectangular boxes, tapered transition structures, and even curved surface combination geometric shapes, these processes are almost beyond the reach. The welding process provides a completely free dimension - any flat expansion diagram derived from engineering drawings can be realized in its three-dimensional form through precise cutting, bending, and welding. In scenarios such as aerospace, semiconductors, and new materials laboratories that often come into contact with the demand for special-shaped containers, the welding process is almost the only feasible technical route.

Optimization of cost and efficiency

The spinning and stamping processes rely on expensive special molds. The cost of mold opening is often tens of thousands of yuan or more, and the mold development cycle lasts from weeks to months. For the development of small batches of prototypes, trial production for scientific research and exploration, and the non-standard needs of customers for differentiated competition, the welding solution does not require mold opening and can be directly processed using standard tantalum plates. The delivery cycle can be compressed to a few weeks, and the cost of single-piece processing is significantly reduced.

Full utilization of the properties of pure tantalum
Tantalum has the best welding properties of all refractory metals, enabling high-quality weld connections while maintaining the material's high purity properties unaffected by the welding process. The entire welding process is carried out in a vacuum environment, which isolates the intrusion of oxygen, nitrogen, and other impurities. The composition of the weld area after welding is highly matched to the base material, and the surface is smooth, without pores and without air leakage. Therefore, the welded tantalum crucible perfectly retains the excellent properties of tantalum metal, such as high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, and low vapor pressure, and there is no concern that the weld becomes a weak link.
