Ta2.5W Tantalum Beans and Balls
Ta2.5W tantalum beans/balls are high-performance refractory metal components based on tantalum (Ta) with tungsten (W) added. They integrate the high density, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature stability of tantalum, along with the enhanced strength of tungsten, making them critical materials in high-end fields such as aerospace, defense, and semiconductors.
I. Chemical Components
Ta2.5W tantalum beans/balls follow the component design logic of Ta-W alloy systems, with strict control over main alloying elements and impurity content.
| Component Category | Specific Elements | Content Requirement | Note |
| Main Alloying Elements | Tantalum (Ta) | Balanced (≈97.5%) | Matrix material, ensuring base performance such as density and corrosion resistance |
| Tungsten (W) | 2.3%–2.7% (typical 2.5%) | Enhances high-temperature strength and creep resistance; content deviation ≤±0.2% | |
| Impurity Elements | Oxygen (O) | ≤0.04% | Strictly controlled to avoid brittleness caused by oxide inclusions |
| Niobium (Nb) | ≤0.01% | Reduces interference with electrical and thermal conductivity | |
| Iron (Fe), Nickel (Ni) | Each ≤0.005% | Prevents degradation of high-temperature mechanical properties | |
| Silicon (Si), Molybdenum (Mo) | Each ≤0.003% | Avoids microcrack formation during processing | |
| Other Trace Elements | Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Zirconium (Zr) | Each ≤0.001%, total ≤0.005% | Inherent impurities from raw materials, not artificially added (per YS/T 751-2024 footnotes) |
II. Production Process

The process of making Ta2.5W tantalum beans or balls is really complicated. It involves a lot of steps starting from making the raw materials really clean, to giving them their final shape. The main technologies used for making Ta2.5W tantalum beans or balls focus on a key things: making sure the mixture of metals is uniform that the balls are perfectly round and that the Ta2.5W tantalum beans or balls work consistently. This is important for Ta2.5W tantalum beans or balls to be quality.
Step 1: Raw Material Purification & Alloy Preparation
* Tantalum Raw Material Refining: Take the tantalum ore and process it using a method called wet metallurgy.
* Tungsten Alloying: We use a kind of powder called tungsten. This tungsten powder is 99.99% pure. We mix this tungsten powder with another powder called tantalum powder. We use a machine to mix these two powders together. This machine makes sure that the tungsten and the tantalum are mixed evenly. This way we can be sure that the Tungsten Alloying has the amount of Tungsten Alloying elements in it. The Tungsten Alloying mixture is 2.5%.
Step 2: Raw Material Purification & Alloy Preparation

Step 3: Forming & Sintering
* Spherical Blank Forming is a process where they take the powder of Tungsten and Tantalum and shape it into spheres. They use a kind of pressing that applies pressure from all sides to make sure the powder is packed tightly and evenly. This pressure is really high least 200 MPa. The goal of Spherical Blank Forming is to get the density of the spheres to be as high as possible so that they're at least 90 percent dense as they could possibly be.
* Vacuum Sintering is a process where blanks are heated in a furnace with very little air inside. This furnace is very good at removing air it can make the air pressure very low. The temperature in the furnace is slowly increased from 1200 degrees to 2000 degrees. The blanks are kept at this temperature for 4 to 6 hours. This helps to remove any holes inside the blanks and makes them very dense. The density of the blanks becomes greater than or equal to 17 g/cm³. The Vacuum Sintering process also helps to form a mixture of Tantalum and Tungsten which is what we want. This mixture is called a Ta-W solution and it is very stable.
Step 4: Precision Machining & Surface Treatment
* Sphericity Correction: The sintered blanks go through a process. They get ground and polished with diamond tools. This helps keep the size right within a tiny difference of plus or minus 0.005mm. The sphericity or how round they are is also very high at ninety five percent or more. This is good enough for parts that go into airplanes and spacecraft which need to be very accurate. The sphericity correction of the sintered blanks is important for this.
* The surface of the material gets a layer called Surface Passivation. This layer is made of an oxide film called Ta₂O₅. It is very thin, about 5 to 10 nanometers. To make this layer the material is heated in a vacuum at a high temperature, between 800 and 1000 degrees Celsius. This process is called vacuum annealing. The material is also oxidized in a controlled way. This special layer helps to prevent the material from getting damaged by corrosion. It can resist acids but it is not resistant to hydrofluoric acid. The Surface Passivation layer is very important for protecting the material from corrosion.
Step 5: Quality Inspection
Component Testing: Spectral analysis (per ASTM E415) verifies W content and impurity levels, ensuring compliance with standards.
* When we do Performance Testing on these things we check an important things. We look at how hard they're which is between 180 and 220HV. We also need to check how dense they are.We test how strong they are when they are very hot which should be at least 150MPa when it is 1600℃. We also do-destructive testing, which is like ultrasonic flaw detection to see if there are any problems inside the Performance Testing materials.
